CFD Applications by VETA

Since inception in 2002 VETA has carried out over 50 consulting projects for a wide cross-section of Australian companies and institutions in many application fields (many projects are confidential). Here is a small sample:

1. Automating many CFD model changes

VETA created a STAR-CD macro and script to automate the solution and post-processing of 64 separate CFD models with different geometries. The application was an automotive HVAC unit (controls passenger comfort) with multiple doors, manufactured by Air International in Melbourne (a STAR-CD user).

2. Woollybut riser buoy

A moving mesh analysis was conducted on a floating oil rig riser buoy to simulate the impact event and determine the peak fluid forces on the fender section of the buoy.

The transient analysis over several milliseconds produced results of impact force versus time. This data was then used to help redesign the buoy and as a boundary condition for a finite element analysis of the impact event, done by another consultant.

3. Methane and steam reaction

A thermo-chemical reaction was modelled where steam entered a methane filled heated pipe. The reaction products were hydrogen and carbon monoxide as shown in the image below.

4. Water purification

Dispersed particle two phase Lagrangian techniques were used to help improve the design of large water purification settling tanks. Resin particles are added to the water to remove organic matter and their potential to agglomerate and settle due to gravity was modelled. Many alternate designs of Fitch feedwell configurations and other novel geometries were modelled.
